"This really is a great machine and we are happy with the quality of work it produces.”
Jorge Villanueva, Executive Director, Cartonajes Lantegi.
In the competitive landscape of European industrial manufacturing, few sectors are as essential – yet often overlooked – as the production of corrugated board. At the heart of this industry in Spain stands Cartonajes Lantegi, a family-owned company that has evolved from its humble beginnings in 1981 into a powerhouse of bespoke packaging solutions. Over the course of four decades, the company has successfully balanced the traditional values of a family business with a relentless drive for technological modernisation, positioning itself as a strategic partner for industries ranging from automotive and aeronautics to food and logistics.
Operating from two primary facilities, Cartonajes Lantegi is defined by its impressive scale and technical agility. The company’s philosophy centres on the idea that packaging is not merely a container, but a critical component of a product’s value chain. This vision is executed by a dedicated team of over 150 people who oversee the entire lifecycle of a project – from the initial conceptual design in their Technical Department to the final stages of manufacturing and delivery.
The company has two production and distribution centres, in Derio (Bizkaia) and Villarcayo (Burgos). In addition, they have an assembly and handling centre in Vitoria-Gasteiz (Araba). At the headquarters in Derio, you’ll find the Technical Team and R&D team, dedicated to the development and research of new products. In Derio, they focus on the production of standard and consumer-grade corrugated boxes and packaging. In Villarcayo they manufacture and store industrial-type packaging, such as large packaging, Octabins, Pallet Boxes and more.
What distinguishes Cartonajes Lantegi in the Spanish market is its specialisation in tailor-made solutions. Rather than offering a rigid catalogue of products, they leverage advanced industrial engineering and the latest trends in structural design to create hybrid packaging. For example, by combining high-performance corrugated cardboard with wood or foam inserts, they provide maximum protection for complex or heavy industrial goods while maintaining a focus on cost-efficiency and material optimisation.
Furthermore, the company has expanded its reach beyond simple manufacturing to offer comprehensive outsourcing and logistics services. This includes specialised assembly, product developmet, and inventory management, allowing their customers to streamline their own supply chains. In an era where sustainability is paramount, Cartonajes Lantegi’s commitment to using recyclable materials and optimising transport volumes ensures that they meet the rigorous environmental standards required by modern global markets.
Latest Investment
The company is no stranger to choosing state of the art equipment, in the pursuit of excellence. The latest machine to be installed was a four colour Kolbus RD 115S flexo rotary die-cutter. Manufactured by Kolbus Group GmbH in Rahden, Germany, the machine is a 3.0m format, offering a wide range of box styles to be produced. The sale was handled by Linotype Packaging S.L., the Iberian agent for Kolbus.
The Kolbus RD 115S rotary die-cutter is a versatile machine. It handles a wide range of die-cut corrugated packaging products: folding boxes, trays, POS, and POP displays. The RD 115S delivers up to 12,000 cut and printed products an hour. This is the first machine of its type to be installed in Spain, something Cartonajes Lantegi is happy about.
“This really is a great machine and we are happy with the quality of work it produces,” says Jorge Villanueva, Executive Director, Cartonajes Lantegi. “Although this was the first machine to be installed in
Spain, we found the installation, training and support from Kolbus Group and Linotype Packaging to be first class. We are very satisfied with our decision to chose the RD 115S for our business.”
“Our thanks to the Laya family, and Executive Director Jorge Villanueva for the trust placed in us and this new generation of Kolbus Group technology,” said Esteban Crucé Vallés, Sales Director, Linotype Packaging S.L. “This has been a project that reinforces the leadership of Cartonajes Lantegi and opens the way to a new stage for the corrugated industry in Spain.”
